The 2019 indoor season started strong in January with Holly Mills winning the England U20 Pentathlon Championships in a new CBP and PB. This performance qualified Holly to represent GB at the International Match in Cardiff where she competed against Spain, France, Czech Republic and Poland. Holly was on top form, recording PB’s in 4 out of the 5 events resulting in a PB score which put her 3rdon the UK U20 All Time list. Holly started her studies at Brunel University this year and has a brand new coaching set up with Laura Turner-Alleyne leading the programme and specifically coaching the hurdles and running, Rafer Joseph the high jump and throws and Frank Attoh leading the long jump.
The squad picked up a few more medals in January with Emily Russell (U20 60m Hurdles) and Clieo Stephenson (SW 60m) both winning bronze medals at the South of England Championship.
February saw six WLTF sprints & hurdles athletes compete at the UK Indoor Championships held in Birmingham. Emily Russell, still only a junior, ran yet another PB in the 60m Hurdles. The following week at the British University Championships both Holly and Emily made the 60m Hurdles final and finished 7thand 8threspectively. Emily once again running a PB. Holly won a bronze medal in the long jump with a leap of 6m 16. Max Schopp recorded two PB’s in the 400m, running an excellent 49.08 in the semi-final. Emily and Modupe Shokunbi helped Brunel win a silver medal in the 4 x 200m relay.
The last few weekends of the season saw even more medals and PB’s. Holly and Emily once again showing their class at the England U20 Championships, both making the final of the 60m hurdles in style. Holly won a bronze and Emily finished 5th, equalling her PB (we lost count of how many times Emily ran a PB this season). Holly finishes the 2019 indoor season ranked U20 No. 1 in the Pentathlon and 60m Hurdles and No.2 in the long jump.
Our very own Norwegian Viking ended the indoor season in fine form. Synne Frydenlund won a bronze in the 200m at the Norwegian U23 Championships, taking 0.55 off her PB. Synne also finished 4thin the 60m in another PB.
While our track athletes have been busy competing indoors, Ryan Letts has been busy on the ice. Ryan has been competing in the North Americas Cup for GB in the two-man where he was joined by pilot Lamin Deen for the season. They secured a 2nd place finish in the competition. Ryan will compete in the World Championships this month.
We are very proud of the squads achievements this indoor season. Next stop is Tenerife for some warm weather training in April before we hit the outdoor season in May.
